First off L Glutamine is one of the many amino acids which are the building blocks of protein that the body can utilise and one of the ones that can be seen as semi essential meaning that even without supplementation the body can produce it by itself however, this doesn’t mean the body is producing high enough levels in order to be able to sufficiently leave it out of your supplementation program. Personally I am a believer in supplementing in very high levels of glutamine up to around 30-40g per day spread throughout the day and have noticed many benefits of this including a lot quicker recovery times from workouts, more growth created through that increased recovery and also when dieting less lean muscle being utilised when getting rid of that unwanted fat. However, many have noticed a lot lower dose still to be very beneficial from 5g twice a day upwards.
Not only would I consider this in opinion to be an essential part of my diet, there are actually times when the human body can consider this also an essential part of the diet that is needed, these are times when the body could be under a lot higher metabolics stress and trauma e.g. burns, illness even such things as cancer can require additional supplementation of glutamine not to mention hard and progressive training programs out there. Infact glutamine is used in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid out there, protecting the body against ammonia toxicity, it is used by white blood cells to help with the immune system and even down to maintaining a normal brain function.
Some of the things l-Glutamine is beneficial for are people suffering from depression, various gastro-intestinal disorders, help with cravings of sugar and alcohol, irritability and the reason I supplement with it which is to help prevent overtraining in athletes.
